1967 880 Selectamatic

Post by DRM » Mon Feb 10, 2020 11:40 am

Here are some photos of my recently acquired 880. Purchased in October last year, it's had new crankshaft and camshaft oil seals and while we were in there, a new clutch plate. Also has been fitted with a thermostart. I've replaced the fuel tank to reinstate the tank unit and fuel gauge and have a modern three way valve to fit to replace the original 3 tap version.

It didn't have a V5 so have obtained an age-related registration from the DVLA. They gave me a "E" reg although the tractor was most likely manufactured in late 1967 so should really be an "F".

Future jobs are to fit lights and reflectors and completely re-wire. The seat, whilst comfortrable is not original and will be replaced with a pan type. My aim is to get it electrically and mechanically sound and then strip to re-paint it. The blue paint on the bonnet has got to go! It has the original lower grille, gold upper grill and DB badge. 4 new tyres are required at some point.

Managed to get a few jobs done on the tractor this weekend. The 3 way valve (rom Richard Pocock and refurbished by Barclay Williams) had been painted a while back and needed fitting. The old three way valve with the missing knobs was removed along with the old trailer tipping pipe.

50 years of gunge was cleaned off and the bolts primed. New o-rings and the more modern 3 way valve was then fitted. This was an option on the 880 but perhaps not in 1967 when the tractor was manufactured. The tipping pipe was then installed which again is a more modern part but a better job I think than the original which would have ended under the seat.

I also found a replacement clevis bracket on eBay as mine was very worn.

Lovely to see these old tractors getting some attention.
I don't mind some later additions that make the machine more usable.

Agree with you on the seat though, looks totally out of place....

Thanks Cadno! A seat is the next major purchase.

A bit more progress this weekend. I finished making the brackets for the cable tubes and trial fitted everything having bent the tubes previously. The brackets started out as 2mm mild steel plate and were cut into strips, drilled to take a 7/16" bolt and the ends rounded. I used a cable tube off a 990 as a template. The tubes still need to be cut to length, the ends flared and then silver soldered onto the brackets.

I finally finished the cable tubes this weekend. The ends of the tubes were flared and then the brackets silver soldered onto the tube. As the tractor had no cable tubes on it when purchased I've had to go off photos from this forum and photos of other tractors taken at shows. The routing of the rear tubes is maybe not original for my tractor - on earlier 880's the tubes went under the ramshaft brackets and on later tractors it changed to straight tubes above the back axle. Not sure which mine would have had but I went for the straight option as I think it will give me a shorter route of unprotected cable across to the mudguards.
