Sounds like the pushrods are not in the tappet

Take off the side access panel (Cover plate) associated with the piston in question and have a look in there. The pushrod should sit in a pocket in the top of the tappet that acts on the camshaft you have to make sure all of them are in position before you drop the head back on and be careful or they can drop straight through into the sump and you have to drop that off to retrieve them.

Once they are in at the bottom then as you drop the head back on you have to make sure the top end of the pushrod is making contact with the adjusting screw valve rocker.

They can be quite tricky to get in and it was a three man job for me as you get three in one would pop out. My wife got the job of putting the pushrods in and making sure they stayed there she ended up covered in oil and was not exactly impressed
