885 pto not releasing - hydraulic clutch

Post by Goof » Wed Jul 26, 2017 3:32 pm

I'm new to the forum, having bought a 1977 885 which is fitted with a Q cab.

I have a problem with the PTO not disengaging with the clutch pedal and having searched through previous posts, they suggest this is either the clutch adjustment or the PTO clutch plates have become stuck through lack of use.

The first thing suggested is usually check the free play on the clutch pedal - mine is hydraulic, so I assume this is not relevant? Does this mean the only adjustment to check is the three locknut/adjusters on the clutch plate? Is there any way of checking that it is the clutch plates that are stuck?

Also, the manuals that are available seem to cover the earlier models. Does anybody know where I can get a manual that covers the later models?

The gap between the 3 internal screws and the inner cover will increase when the transmission clutch plate wears. The pto clutch will not disengage anymore when the transmission plate has wear to the point that the rivets almost starts to touch the pressure plate. This is a feature that tells you that the transmission plate has to be change in the very near future. Adjusting the screws to a gap specified for new parts will make the pto clutch work if the clutch plate is worn, but you will have to split the tractor and fix the clutch before the transmission clutch plate rivets starts to rub into the pressure plate. Try the adjustment first, and you will then know if the intermediate plate is stuck or not. If the separator plate is stuck inside the flywheel, then the only real option is to split the tractor and fix the problem.

Thanks Ollek,
It's not sounding too promising at the moment then. I'll check the clutch adjusters and see what effect that has.
Thanks again,

Did you find out what the problem was?
My 1979 Q cabbed 885 looks like it might be heading the same way as yours.
