Draining a 1210 gearbox oil !

Draining a 1210 gearbox oil !

hi,
right i have decided to drain the gearbox oil, but i am going to store it, sieve it, then pour it back if its ok.
my question is...

what is the correct way to drain the gearbox, and is there a particular way to fill it back up, a pal suggested that i might need to prime the hydraulics after filling!!.. is that right?

Drain oil when changing bottom hydraulic filter in the round hat cover and also remove the bung under the pto housing too as some oil sits there too. Lift front if possible by parking upslope. Not sure why you wnat it all drained but pretty well impossible to remove it all. Hydraulics shouldn't need bleeding. Not sure how to fil if you have a cab though?

Q cabbed models are filled via the elbow on the right side of the PTO housing just below the top link sensing unit/clevis. Other cabbed models and non cabbed models fill through the top of the gearbox. When you drain down the oil and probably renew the filter under the pan, leave the hydraulic lever in the lower position and raise the lever a minute or so after starting the engine again which gives the oil time to start circulating and reach the pump, which starts to pump as soon as you start cranking over the engine.

Intimidator. I am going to be slightly critical of your intended actions. I never put oil back into a transmission unless I knew that it hadn't been in there very long and looked like new oil.

If you are going to try and put some of the oil back into the gearbox straining won't achieve anything. It's the small bits of metal, brass etc. that you are trying to get out and that can only be done by filtering it. I know that you haven't got Hydra-Shift in your tractor but you still have Selectamatic hydraulics and they rely on really clean oil.

Whenever I have put oil back in I have always left the old oil to settle for a couple of days then just decanted the top back into the tractor and left the crud at the bottom of whatever you have put the oil in. Most of the nasty stuff will have settled out by then. It goes without saying that your containers need to be totally clean as well.

hi scooby, i dont mind anyone being critical, you learn by your mistakes as they say!!.
i have already drained some oil off, and it looks in pretty good condition,some water came out first, but only enough to fill an egg cup, then the oil looked clean, not milky or anything.
so i thought if the oil is ok, then i would re use it after i had cleaned it up a bit.
so i take your point, and if the oil looks very poor, then i will just use completly new oil.
thank you for your concerns, and help.
i have attatched a photo of what came out of the sump, straight after the water stopped.

I wouldn't put that back in mine. Looks awful. I have worked on too many Selectamatic valves I guess.

Ridiculous. "Case" Hytran-Ultra is about $75 US for 5 gallons from the dealer. Only the real Case Powershifts get that. Too many wet clutches in these to worry about coming unglued. A transmission failure means junking the machine.

The DBs all get Castrol 15w40(@$250/55 gallons), or generic Hytran(@$30/ 5 gallons).

$30 US would be about 19 Pounds Sterling(sorry, don't have the right key on my keyboard).

I wouldn't put the $30 stuff in an engine, but to clean out a milky gearbox it is just fine.

"Good" diesel(name brand) rated oil is normally about $10 a gallon.

Is that 475 for a 55 gallon drum?

No sales tax here if it is for agricultural purposes.

We had one a while back about the time oil was in its infancy. It didn't come out so well.

We are working on another right now, I think this will not be a geographic war, but rather one of those willing to work versus those looking for handouts.

Off road diesel was $3.80/ gallon yesterday. or 2.35 Pounds/gallon
