Case DB Crawlers
Case DB Crawlers
Have just read that DB engines were installed into some Case crawler tractors around 1972--1973 has anyone any information on what models these were.
Re: Case DB Crawlers
I think we have to be a little bit careful here. When Tenneco bought David Brown Tractors in 1972 and gave J.I.Case the responsibility for the operation, a lot of things started to happen. One was that some individuals in the US stared to call David Brown machines Case earlier than was planned. The stickers on David Brown machines imported to US was in some cases change to Case. David Brown also manufactured machines with different names to many sales outlets around the world.
Re: Case DB Crawlers
Hi ollek this was specific to DB engines being used in Case crawler tractors be it industrial or standard around the Case takeover, i thought it was very interesting and wondered what models it applied to if anyone knows or has one.

Re: Case DB Crawlers
The case 450 crawlers sold in England used David Brown 990 engines. The same model machines sold in America used the case engine.
For some reason the manual for the case 450 only gives details of the case engine without as much as a mention of anything else being used, despite the fact that it was done different in the UK market.

Do you have any photos you could post here or email me direct, not sure if any made it to this part of the world have never seen one but would like to. cheers Geoff

The ones I know are both 450. Pictures might be possible but it's not easy for me to get them off the phone, just put case 450 into google and you should see plenty of them.
Re: Case DB Crawlers
Hi bedwards have yet to find any any DB powered ones the exhaust position indicates what its powered by, plenty of Case powered ones. cheers Geoff
Re: Case DB Crawlers
When on holiday in Iceland in August 1987 i did see a Case crawler with a DB engine. I cannot be sure of its exact model but i seem to remember it was an 850 (possibly because it was the same number as a DB agricultural model).
What i do remember is that it was a 4 cylinder turbocharged engine & had an inline injection pump, so was probably similar to the DB 1410/1412 agricultural wheeled tractor engine.

Re: Case DB Crawlers
But are there any case powered ones in the UK? I believe not, we got the DB engines while the rest of the world probably got the case ones. Think it's known as a 188 diesel in the 450's but that's off the top of my head.

The 450 is their small one, they also did an 1150. The 1150 will (must!) have had a bigger engine and it stands to reason that it'd be a DB one.mc wrote: ↑Sun May 27, 2018 5:51 pmWhen on holiday in Iceland in August 1987 i did see a Case crawler with a DB engine. I have contemplated fitting a turbo to my little 450 with the 990 engine as more grunt would be very useful, but understand that in normal form it's not a strong enough engine for a turbo. It works though.
