DB 885 cab roof repair

Post by brianjbox » Thu Sep 22, 2016 9:59 am

Hi all

I had an op on my shoulder and ordered off work for 6 weeks so thought I'd tackle my cab roof which let the tractor down, I had spotted on here a post where a member purchased a new one but it was quite a lot of money [to me] and you didn't get the inner panel.

I set about removing the roof which was already separated from the inner section, simple job but it was in a right mess, corners bashed in and bit's missing plus cracked all over as I guess really brittle. I then lifted the inner section off the cab which again was all broken and fell to bit's shortly after removing it!

I measured roof up and ordered fibreglass matting and resin which wasn't enough, you always use more than you thought.

I used a hot air gun to warm the bashed in corners up which allowed me to manipulate them back into shape, super glue was used to hold cracked parts together and the glass fibre sheet was used where plastic was missing and to reinforce repairs.

I have uploaded loads of pic's with link's below.
I'm not a fibre glass expert so no doubt I've done things wrong.
Half way through I wished I'd never started.
I am pleased with the end results and am glad I had a go.
Total cost of project including paint about £150.00

Best of luck if you have one to do and feel free to ask any questions if you so wish.

Brian.

Hi, this looks great. These roof are usually badly damaged and really spoil the appearance of a tractor. This looks like a 'painting the Forth bridge' job, but you have made a great job.
