With the frame platforms ready to go back on, attention turned to the brake rods. As the nuts were seized I'd had to cut one of these off in order to remove the frame platforms so I needed to make some new ones. I also decided to get some new adjusting nuts machined as the originals were badly corroded.

New pedal return springs were fitted, the frame platforms put back on the tractor and the foot brakes and hand brake connected back up. I'll adjust the brakes when the wheels are back on.

Next, the hitch plates were refitted with the drawbar carriage in place in order to ensure that the step bolts lined up. The top 4 bolts holding the hitch plates to the PTO housing had their threads sealed with Hylomar as I think this is where oil was leaking from previously.

Then the top link sensing unit was refitted. This had been refubished a while back and fitted with a new cable support as the original one was mangled.

With the sensing unit back on, a new top link sensing cable was fitted. This will need adjusting when the arms are back on.

Finally, the lift rods were refitted with the original bolts and Clevelock nuts but with new washers and bushes.

After looking for 18 months, I finally found a set of 32" rear wheels on eBay (the rarity was reflected in the price I paid). They are in really good condition (better than my existing 28" wheels) and came off an Implematic, hence the colours. The part numbers are the same though. I hear that 32" wheels were the standard fitment on 880's but you see a surprising amount of tractors on 28's". The 32's have levelled the tractor off nicely and will make it a bit faster on road runs.

You can also see the grille guard fitted a while back, also off eBay. When received, the front part was slightly bent but when it was fitted, the angle and distance to the bonnet was not right. It turned out that the top edge of the side brackets should be straight but were actually banana shaped but with some heat and the anvil we managed to get everything straight again. I think it's quite a good fit now. I'm not sure whether I like the look of the tractor more or less with the grille guard but I'll get it tidied up and painted and make a decision then. It will certainly protect the tinwork.

After adjusting the brakes and fitting the drawbar, I took it for a quick run out and took a few more photos.

It's looking better now, albeit a bit rainbow coloured. Getting a bit closer to paint.

Thanks Moose.

Had a good day out yesterday - my wife wanted some logs collecting for her Forest School area where she teaches so I thought this might be a good proving run after putting the 880 back together. So by the end of the day, we’d done 41 miles across three counties including some steep climbs onto the top of the Cotswolds. The tractor ran perfectly and the weather was great.

I'd been following recent discussions on the forum about not being able to change gear on the move so I didn't, especially as my clutch stop is working properly now. The load wasn't heavy so I could start off in H3 on the level and if there was a big hill coming up I stopped at a suitable point and selected H2. No problem as it turned out.

Hoping to get a haybob on the back now to test the arms.
