Case with DB name label

Post by John.Newman » Mon Aug 14, 2017 12:20 pm

Went to a small farm auction clearing sale last week-end and one of the tractors put up was a Case 970 with only 4400hrs on it. On each side of the nose cowl were Case David Brown name tags. This was common here in the mid-70s on the 70 series Case tractors which ranged from the 870 through to the 1370. This one sold for $4750 +10% GST (VAT) or 3030 pounds. Mainly all it required to bring it up to a tidy condition was 2 rear tyres, 1 front and a cab lining kit. Other tractors offered were a pair of Allis Chalmers (circ 1940) tractor wrecks (as advertised) and the one with the extended grader frame sold for $500 and the other went for $600. There was also a early '70's Chamberlain C670 which was passed in. A realistic price for this one would be about Au$4 - 5000. All I came home with was a pile of steel fence posts and some wire mesh panels for the garden. It was hard to keep my hands in my pockets though as the bidding was extremely slow on the Case. I don't think I would have been too popular with the cook (and mechanic's off-sider) if I brought home another 100hp class classic tractor as I just bought one recently.
Regards, John

Hello John, hope all is well with you and the family. I only had experience of a 970 Agri-King once and it was very embarrassing. DB were sending a 970 around the country to show us yokels how a big tractor would be so beneficial for us ! When the local DB agents got hold of it they borrowed a 5 furrow Ransomes conventional plough and then found a decent sized field to plough and invited a load of us to go and have a go.

But it was a bit of stiff Warwickshire clay and as you probably know the 970 didn't even have a diff. lock. Being 2wd made the matter worse. It had got the wrong tyres on and the whole day was an absolute fiasco. Red faces all round. It would have been O.K. on a forager or dualled up and working ground but you would never have ploughed with it.

But I did like the cab. Far better that anything that was around in those days.

When DB/Case started bringing these over to sell we (David Brown Tractors at Wragby) had a few to do reworks on before they could be sold. The main thing being the electrics to make them road legal here, indicators and lights, but some of the decals were also changed and the kit included the decals you mentioned.
