help with a serial number

Post by gainesvilleguy » Sun Nov 15, 2015 1:23 pm

So my dad has an old I think David Brown tractor. I'm looking into getting it running again and need to find out what year and model it is. I have found a serial number which says AD4 36A0 6497. But this doesn't seem to match with serial numbers on David Brown tractors. However it looks very similar to pictures of the 880 model I have seen online. I was wondering if anyone has any information on this. Any help would be hugely appreciated.

Also, it's a green tractor, but it may have been painted. The hood cover says oliver, but my Dad says that was put there to replace the old one.

The AD4/36A engine is a David Brown 850 model from around 1961. It would be better if you could post up the serial number which will be found on the top of the front casting just behind the bonnet/hood side panel rearwards of the radiator on the right hand side of the tractor. It would also help if you could post up some pictures of the whole tractor as being painted green could be either that it was a local authority tractor (Council)or, if you are in he US it could be one that was made for the Oliver tractor Co.

I will put up some more pictures of it later today when I go out to work on it. Thanks for your input. I guess that's the engine serial number and not the tractor serial number. We do live in the US and I know it was bought here. My dad's memories are a bit shaky on it, but I do know that it was purchased from a dealer here.

You may also find it's identity on a brass plate fixed to the front of the cross-box that sits between the wings, behind the hand brake lever/hydraulic lift levers on the right hand side, that's if the plate is still there.

Here are some more pics. I found the serial number. It's 2-0C/101833. I think it's an oliver 500 based on what I found which also says is identical to a David Brown 850. So does this make it an Oliver or a David Brown? I've never spent much time working on tractors so please forgive my ignorance.

Your tractor is a Oliver 500 model that was built by David Brown for Oliver. It is basically a DB850 implematic that was painted green so color and decals are correct. Here is an informative article about the history of the Oliver 500 :

Let me know if you have any other questions as me and my father have recently restored a gasoline version as well as a 600 model. Also feel free to reach out to David K. McGuire with any questions as he has two model 500's and is a very nice guy.
