I bought a 1984 1490 Case IH (David Brown) this past summer from a local federal Government Airport.The clock on the dash said 106 hrs and the airport manager confirmed it.He said it was the true hours.

I was told by the airport maintenance staff that the engine was stuck, the transmission did not go into third gear the hydraulics did not work and I had a nightmare on my hands.It came equipped with a front loader (FREY) , made in Ontario Canada and a a KELLER backhoe, made in Mitchigan.

After I had gotten the tractor home , oil and filter changes , new diesel fuel and transmission oil and filters were replaced. It took only a few turns of the engine and it started perfectly The front loader worked well but the Hoe was slow. After looking at this form and finding out an element screen was under transmission I removed it gave it a thorough cleaning and put everything back together. Every thing has worked fine since then..

A little adjustment of an aliagment rod under the gearshift I had third gear Working. Everything was working perfect (few bulbs and screws required , a little paint job) up until I took off the back hoe and started to install a snow blower. I live on the west coast of Newfoundland and winter is comming.

When I took the hoe off the lift arms slowly dropped to the ground had for the life of me I cannot get them to rise up.

On my right hand side I (while sitting in the seat ,This is a cab unit ) I have the selector stick with lower - raise and external on it. Below the selector stick is a knurled knob with a(rabbit) I know this is fast and a( turtle) and I know this is slow.On back of the selector stick are two valve handles to operate the front loader or B/H. valve handles in the up position for loader , down for B/H . below these two valves is the PTO engage leaver and a leaver with position and draft on it.

When I Try and push the selector stick to the up position I feel pressure on the stick but nothing happens. Meanwhile the loader is working fine. I also pushed a round button with a leaver on it by the base of the valve stack back and forth and no difference in thelift arms

Where Do I start and repair the problem

First of all, can I recommend you get hold of one of these

It may help both with this problem and perhaps others.

Until one of the experts picks up your request for help, the only thing that occurs to me (and I'm a complete amateur) is on my 1390 - which is very similar - I have to use the 3 way valve which is operated bty a handle to the left of the seat. This valve controls the flow of oil from the HP pump.

From memory, pushed down to the floor allows the right hand "lower raise" handle to operate the lift arms. In the middle position, and with the right hand lever in the raise position, it puts oilflow to my front end loader.

NB. Before you move the 3 way valve, the right hand lever should be in the lower position.

Have a play.

Not familiar with your machine, but on mine, 1210 Selectamatic, there is another lever on the left hand side of the seat. In the operators manual it is called '3 position valve', but it has 4 positions ? In position 1 it directs all pump pressure to the loader cutting out the arms. There will be a valve of this nature on your machine. Moving the lever towards the seat operates the arms cutting off the supply to the loader.
