What type of cast iron are most parts on my 850.
Is it possible to repair a crack and if so: how ?

Dunno the name but it's part of the flange that's broken of the housing
that drives the speedo cable thingie.

dammit Jack, I am a carpenter, not a welder ! :lol:

Cast iron is cast iron, it's just that the cast on a D.B engine block and the other cast bits are finer cast. The part that's broken sounds like the top of the oil pump drive with the threaded bit for the tacho cable connection. This can be replaced with one from any other red D.B tractor that has the same connection, for instance, 950, 880 4 cylinder and some later 900's. It is held in place by the small bolt and is flanged underneath where it slots into the block, there is a paper gasket between the two mating surfaces. Don't bother to attempt to repair the broken one, it's not worth the hastle.

Hello there! Just for the record. You can glue cast iron together if the part is not too highly stressed using Milliput 2 part epoxy casting repair cement, its really quite strong and long lasting. You can also weld cast iron using a stick welder with cast iron rods, heat the area to be welded first with a blow torch. Good luck... Joe90.

Just one point in repairing cracks or breaks in cast iron with the glue type methods, no glues will work on anything that has come into contact with oil unless the area is totally purged of all traces of oil, this is almost impossible on items that have been exposed to oil over a period of years.

the best luck i've had is with a dc arc welder and disamiler welding rod at a low volt around 60 its slow process but seems to hold and taps well Doug

The other very easy way to repair a casting of this nature if you can take it off is to braize it
Clean the metal thoroughly if it is oily clean it with thinners and even pass an oxidising flame over the surfaces as part of the heating process make sure you coat the surfaces with flux clamp them lightly together and make sure the whole casting is hot enough before applying the brass rod

Steve and ttpilot both have right ideas on this one,
I would weld as a preference if a replacement was hard to source.
I once welded an exhaust manifold up using process similar to what TT has said.
All i would recommend is you get correct rods from a welding supplier and if possible grind a "V" into the area to be cast and ensure you pre and post heat the whole of the cast you are welding if not you risk cracking or in extreme cases shattering of the cast.
