Hello,I am needing some advice on an 885 engine shutting off when I turn the retard screw back out to run position. It will crank but runs irratic and smokes.I have 2 885s and even swapped out injection pumps, same problem.I have checked cam timing, injection timing and valve timing.Any help would be appreciated.

Can you please clarify the situation. Does the engine stop when the cold start is screwed out ? Does the engine smoke when trying to start without engaging the cold start ? How did the problem start, has any work been carried out involving any part of the fuel system?

It was a parts tractor I bought 3 years ago. It had a spun bearing on the crank and the other 885 also had a bad crank,so I was going to take the 2 and make 1.I took the engine out and put a new crank shaft ,new rod and main bearings ,honed cylinders and put new rings. It acts like it has water in the fuel but I put 4 gallons of new fuel in it .I have 4 of these old David Browns but never had this issue.I removed the head 2 days ago just to double check the valves to make sure there was no warped valves. Maybe I should have had the block bored.

I had the injectors proffesionally cleaned and rebuilt with new tips and needles when I had the engine out.It will crank with the retard screw and run til about 3/4 the way back open then shut down,it also smokes once it starts

I suggest checking the fuel return pipeline from the injection pump to the fuel tank for any kind of blockage or restriction.

Hi, I have had the 3 cylinders wear out the circlip on the Injector pump drive gear, it slips down and moves the timing a few degrees. To check you will have to remove the injector pump.

I have 2 of these 885s ,I changed the injection pump had the same issue but I will check the circlip, thanks. Both tractors were supposedly running when parked but you know how that goes.I bought them from 2 different people neither one was running both had spun bearings but a lot of good parts.

When oppr if I buy something that is "not running at the moment, but it was running when I parked it" I price them on scrap or spare parts value. The reason is that some people handle the truth very carelessly if you understand what I mean.
If it ran all those years back and it was not seized anyone would put an hour or so into getting it running again to improve the sale price and interest.

It might be useful to know whether the engine keeps running OK if you do not screw out the retard (blocking) screw, and that the erratic running is indeed a direct result of unclamping the auto-advance device. If so, there is a timing error at some point. If I understand correctly, the screw in question blocks the timing (injection) advance system to make cold starting easier. Once the engine is running, the device is unblocked by withdrawing the screw, and the injection timing is allowed to advance in light-load running. An engine with correct timing will run erratically and with smoke, if the advance system is kept blocked, but you seem to have the opposite problem. And the problem is the same with two different pumps... Are you totally sure, that the pump drive gear is in the correct position?

I got the first one 3 years ago,got it running but it was getting blow-by filling the crank case with smoke.I didn't have a lot of $$$ in it so I let it sit for about a year. I bought a 990 that had been sitting for 20 years,it was a12 speed .The needle bearing and front triangle plate on the front of the transmission were both shot, the plat was in 6 pieces, took a while to find all the parts. Getting back to the 885,the timing is what it sounds like to me.Ollek had sent me a picture of the pump a while back and the C is where it should be.I pulled the head back off last week and checked the valves and timming again. I will add pic. of the 990,quite proud of it.

It turned out pretty good, worked on it all last winter.Had to pull the transmission, that was a job ,had to find the front gear and needle bearing and the front plate. Made the tool to put the spring and gear back in the differential lock, dont think I want to tackle that job again. Took 4 days to get #1 injector out then had to free stuck engine. Had to have shims made for the transmission there was only pieces of shims, just enough to measure and get new ones made.
