1390 Starter Problem

Hi,

For the last few week the 1390 has been reluctant to start. When I turned the key the engine would half heartedly try to turn almost as though the battery was nearly dead. Then try again and it turned normally and fired up.

Just gone out in it again and it started fine, then I stopped it to do something and when I got back in wouldn't turn at all. Oil pressure and alternator light go out but nothing from the starter. I checked all wiring and cleaned battery terminals (6 month old battery) but still nothing. I tried shorting the two main connections on the starter but instead of the large spark you normally get when trying this, just a very feeble one - and it didn't spin the starter.

I'm suspecting something wrong with the solenoid, but before I try removing starter (awkward job yo say the least as I've got a loader fitted) would welcome any suggestions.

Regards

Alchad

Have you cleaned all cable connections between the battery and the starter (both positive and negative cable connections)? There is more connectors than just the battery poles. What size of battery do you use (amperage hours and cranking amperage)?

If possible, measure the voltage on the "motor side" (not the battery side) of the solenoid contacts as you try to start. If the voltage is >10 V but the starter is sluggish or not turning at all, you may have problems with the starter motor brushes. If the voltage is < 6 V, the solenoid contacts are probably at fault. This is assuming the battery i OK, but as you describe the problem as intermittent, battery issues seem less likely. Battery voltage can be measured as well, of course during start attempts.

This could also be a problem with the cabling (pole clamps, cables, chassis connections) from the battery.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

Took the starter off - not easy with the loader on, have to remove alternator, steering pump reservoir and fuel lift pump first! Brushes on motor completely worn down and they're not the type an amateur can replace, but fortunately one of the local agricultural engineers apparently can, so left it with him to refurbish. Rather spend the money with him and have it good for another 30 years than buy a Chinese one which might not last quite so long!

While waiting put your new battery on charge to make sure it is fully charged.
