As John Newman said, welding an appropriate nut on is often a decent way of freeing stuff off, heating and cooling cycles (without quenching, ideally) will break up a lot of corrosion. Differential heating is even better (heat the nut, but cool the bolt/stud) but an absolute pain in the ************ most of the time.

Left handed drills can work very well if you have a good centre and a strong nerve, but is often a complete nightmare on an item in situ (and if your 3 nuts are a problem, your manifold studs almost certainly will be just as bad)

Saying all that, we did the manifold job earlier in the year (after a low flying branch broke the manifold to exhaust casting) ended up shearing both studs, and welding nuts (M8, if I recall) onto the sheared studs. Left everything to cool then heated the manifold (with wet rags on the studs) with a mapp torch.

Came out like new bolts after that.

That is very helpful. Thanks to everyone for their help. I cheated a bit yesterday though. I cleaned the bottom of the bit that goes into the flange and dribbled a few spots of weld on and then ground them down so that it would go into the flange. The exhaust is much tighter now and doesn't wobble about so much. It really needs a new one but I don't think they are the same as the originals.

I also have had good luck welding on a nut. Sometime I just weld on a big blob and grab it with locking pliers as it is cooling down.
The wire feed mig welder is best, but stick can be used also.
If the thread is stripped, drill it to a larger size and install a thread insert.
