990 gearbox

Post by poppydog » Sun Mar 24, 2019 6:47 am

My 990 selectamatic some times does not want to go into gear but if I wriggle the gear lever it will work.
For example, I try putting it in 1st gear and I have to put it into 2nd or 3rd and then it goes into 1st. It does not do this every time but I am wondering if this is normal for an old tractor or does it signify something wearing in the box. Any advice please?

My 880 doesnt always go straight into gear but if I let the clutch out and try again it usually goes in. I think its just a feature of a non syncro box??

All non synchro gearboxes have this problem. If the gear teeth are ‘ edge on ‘ the gear has to be moved slightly to achieve alignment.

the trick is to just nick it in place before the cogs have stopped spinning. If the tractor is rolling doing the old double declutch will work a treat , the secret there is matching the engine and ground speed. something every one over a certain age learnt to do.
now the youngsters haven't a clue what to do with a gear lever!

That is a bit tricky to do on a 30c where you sit on one side of the gearbox and the hand throttle is on the far side of your passenger but she doesn't mind at all.

Hi, I have a similar problem on a couple of my DBS, it's more like worn selector gates and when I change from 1or R to 2 or 3 the 1 and R selector rail doesn't quite return to neutral which stops the 2 and 3 selector moving. Hope this makes sense!
