Flushing out the block

Evening all.
I’ve just had the radiator record for my 25d.

The rad man said a fair few or the cores were blocked when he stripped it down so I’m thinking it wouldn’t be a bad thing to flush the block out before refitting the radiator.

What’s the best way to do this? Can I just stick the hose in the top hose and wash the crap out the bottom?
Hopefully I’m not over simplifying it :lol: it I would like to do a good job as I can’t really justify the cost of having do this again if I can help it :wink:

There is no panic as I’m Possibly going to paint the bonnet and grill while it’s off, I’m in 2 minds on this at the min as the tractor is still in its factory paint but the wings and cross box need repair soon and will then need painting but could be blended in to match the Oe paint :?:

You can use a radiator cleaner but these only get rid of the easy and loose stuff. What I found after doing a complete engine rebuild on our 30C was that the dirt and rust gets stuck in and around the bore and as I removed the welsh plugs it made it easier to loosen even more 'crud' from the hard to get at bits. I did send my block off the the engineer shop who then caustic bathed the whole block and cleared the oil galleries out as well. So At least remove the welsh plugs, have a dig around and use a gernie (pressurized water) or a strong hose to remove as much as possible. There IS going to be a lot inside the block. The cost of a handful of welsh plugs is nothing to having high engine temps or at the very least an inefficient cooling system.
While your at this point have a look at the cooling tube behind the water pump. I did and found that it was almost completely gone. So I bought a new one made from stainless steel to ensure the new engine is under control in the temperature race. Now i live in hot climate (Australia) and after a lot of discussion both on this site and others there is a healthy discussion for the good and bad for this tube. I decided that I wanted it back in there as originally designed so it lives there nicely and now with everything thoroughly clean it does run at a constant temperature all the time and no issues which I like.

25/30 engine cylinder blocks are not fitted with welch washers unfortunately.
I suggest fitting a hose pipe to the block drain tap to flush the system.

Sorry for miss leading you on that. It must have been another engine that had the welsh plugs in the block.
Well at least you can remove the plug or drain tap near the carby and have a dig around there and there is a number of welsh plugs in the head on the manifold side.

Thank you all. I will fetch the drain plug out when I get a min to get back to it and see what I can get out.

Hi, in the past I have used a tee fitting that you connect your water hose to and air compressor to then fit in the block drain tap hole. With the air running in aswell as water it seems to remove a lot more crap but have both radiator hoses off and thermostat out aswell.

By adding air to the system in cleaning it out will help a lot.

That’s a good idea re the air, I will have ask around for a tyre fitters water ballasting valve. Thanks all

Radiator repair shops put a gentle blast of air through the cores to helps create a shock wave to loosen crud inside there too.
