885 Fuel gauge - Wiring & general advice

Im making way on the full re-wire of 885, its been completely stripped out and starting from fresh. (so far switched from dyno to alternator)

Ive had to replace the fuel sender and bought a new one, tested with the multi meter and it works fine.
Fuel gauge tested and works.

Together....cant get it to work. Im either getting it reading full or nothing. No matter the position of the sender, this is all being tested on the bench using a 12v battery.

Im not convinced the wiring is correct, eventhough im following the DB wiring diagram as per the electrical diagram.

Having scanned over some old photos ive noticed what i beleive to be a voltage stabiliser/ reducer on the back of the gauge which i dont have anymore. I kind of assumed this wasnt needed now ive got a alternator on instead of dyno.

Do i need this to reduce the voltage from 12v to 10v?

A detail: A dynamo or an alternator in this case makes no difference. Alternators can be driven at higher revs than dynamos and are normally "geared" for higher revs by having smaller belt pulleys; thus they start charging the battery quicker and keep charging even a low engine speeds. System voltage regulation aims for the same level (14,4 Volts) on both types, as this is what is needed to keep the battery happy.

May I ask where you obtained your 885 wiring diagram?

As stated there will be no differnce in the power whether it is generated from an altenator or generator. 12v is 12v. Sounds more like a short somewhere in the wiring.If it worked well by connecting the wires from power to sender and gauge and then lifting the arm on the sender and the gauge worked properly then there is a short in the system somewhere giving a full reading on the gauge.
