where does this small part fit Selectamatic 990?

I have almost refitted all parts on refurbishment of the 1968 engine.

I had labelled containers so that I knew where removed parts fit.

BUT I remember near the end of disassembly stage thinking "I will easily remember where this part fits".

My brain has stopped working.

Please does anyone recognise the part and can advise me where it belongs.

It is 3/4" (18mm) long, 1/2" (12 mm) diameter and has a 3/8" (just over 9mm) thread

To me it looks like the inside of a Gear Shift ball (Knob)

Yeah that's what I thought but I thought they would be brass?

Thank you for the remarkable knowledge and understanding.
Yes, I now remember after I had DB 990 towed to my property, I then moved the gear levers and one gear lever ball disintegrated in my hand.
I then removed said item to establish the type of thread.

Hopefully sometime in the future I can help others.
