I am looking at buying a 1987 1594 case. I know absolutely nothing about case. The guy who has it has owned it for 15 years. He is super obsessive compulsive when it comes to maintenance. It is extremely well taken care of. My question is what does everyone think of this make and model tractor? Is there anything to look for or check out on it? Are there any parts of the tractor known for issues? Just looking for general opinions and an overview.

This looks a great tractor. The model and make (David Brown) are highly respected on this forum.
The 6-cylinder engine will be very reliable as long as the servicing continues and that it is worked according to the fact that it may be around 30 years old. A tractor in such original condition would be very rare in the UK.

One point to check is the engine oil pump. Ask if the pump has got better gears because the original ones may wear out in 5000 hours. Otherwise the engine just runs and runs and runs. A contractor here has made well over four laps on the clock by a 1594 and the engine still has original bores, crank, head, transmission, brakes and hydraulics. Even the front axle is close to original in spite of the heavy FEL on the tractor.

The oil pump in my commemorative 1594 failed on exactly 5000 hours. Fortunately I saw the oil light come on and saved it!

Thanks for the insight guys. This tractor has about 4000 hours on it and is extremely well maintained. I made the purchase so I hope all goes well from here.

That is strange to hear James. I thought they had sorted out the pmps by the time the "Comms" were going down the track. But when I purchased mine the first thing I got done, before I ever used it, was to get Barcley Williams to put a new pump on it for me. And she had only done 1600 hours.

But I had a neighbour with a magpie and his let go one day when it was on the forage harvester. That was messy !
If you tell me the serial number of your tractor Cody I can give you some details about date of manufacture etc. It should be a plate on the left hand side of the bell housing.

just to add on this Cody, the 6 cylinders (with Hydrashift) can be a bit of a bottomless pit on repairs IF they have not been serviced/looked after or abused - this one sounds like its been well care for so should be ok.
On the oil pumps though, the pump is a known failure item, it is not down to lack of servicing its a design / manufacturing fault - ie even a very well serviced one can suddenly fail, this item is not down to lack of servicing so may be worth looking into having a new pump fitted.
Some things never change, a while ago VW had an issue with oil pump failure on the Diesels and the less said about new shape Ford Transits the better!!

On the beginning of production six cylinder models had oil pump gears which had insufficient surface hardness. The pumps may have looked quite normal after 4000 hours run but in bright light and correct angle some waves could be detected on the gears profile. The rapid destruction was already close to take place. The new type harder gears last practically forever and if you have no better way to test the hardness, a sharp file will cut the too soft gear but glide like on glass on a harder gear.
Another point with six potters is the injection pump. If the tractor becomes very smoky and slow to fire, the problem is not necessarily the injectors. I have seen several 1690 and 1694 starting a new life by getting the pump replaced or overhauled.
