1490 slow starting
Now that the weather has gone cold my 1490 is very hard started when cold. last spring I put in another new battery , hi tourge starter but it is still slow turning over when cold

RE: 1490 slow starting
Firstly, what oil do you have in the engine and what size battery do you use? Cold climate asks for 10W-30 oil and a as big as possible battery for the battery tray. Also look for a battery with high cold crank amperage. And then, look for possible contact problems in the cables from the battery to the starter motor (both positive and ground side). If some of the connections are hot when the starter motor is working, you will have to clean out the contact faces at that point. Then, keep the thermostart (I hope your tractor has one) in operation for at least 30 seconds before you start to crank the engine. When the engine runs, but is still smoking, throttle back to idle but do not stop using the thermostart before the engine runs a little bit cleaner.

First thing would be to ensure the tractor is fully serviced - such as new engine oil, filter, air filters, Diesel filters. Make sure the Diesel lift pump is pumping well and there are no blockages. Make sure the valves tappets are set correctly. Next thing is some money spending on it. Ideally new rings, injectors, injector pump, new valves. Cold weather tests engines that are getting past their best, buying a bigger battery only buys you some time and does not hide the fact that the engine is in need of some attention.

Ensure all the battery contacts are in good, clean condition. Make sure the positive lead is in good order and ends clean. The negative wire should be fastened to the chassis as the original idea of it being fastened to the air filter tray area is not ideal after 30 years of rusting. Often people directly connect the negative cable to the starter motor. Also the starter motor should be earthed itself with a cable/thick wire. If doing this does not improve the situation then battery off and make a New Year's resolution to recondition it.

When was the starter motor serviced?

One more time, what are the specifications for the battery you are using? Are all the contact surfaces between the battery and the starter motor clean and tight?

Another thing to try before you try and start the 1490 is - disconnect the plug going into the altenator. The reason for this is if the brushes in the altenator are grounded they will be drawing a fair load from the battery which means the full power from the battery wont be going to the starter.
I had that problem on my 1494 not so long ago. I got the alternator refurbished and problem solved.
