Have you actually had the sender unit out? Theres a wire that runs down the length of the sender unit and these are common for breaking where they are soldered on.

Both good models, in my opinion the 12 speed 990 will look nicer restored. We have a 1970 one thats mint.

Glad you got your tractor back Jon. A battery isolator switch is a good place to start, won't stop them but will slow them down. Maybe an inline tap hidden on fuel line somewhere would be an idea.
