If he had the L/H gear lever out he has probably refitted the lever the wrong side the spring and the gear selector jaws in the wrong place If you lift the lever out you will see the spring, just put the lever the other side the spring and put the selectors in place.
You can check the lubrication pipe is still in place by noting where the locking nut was from the bolt head then remove it. Then screw the bolt into the axle until it stops. If the measurement is more or less the same the pipe is located correctly.

If you don't have .070ins in feeler gauges, .070ins relates to more or less 1½ turns of the adjusting screw. So if you turn all three adjusting screws until they contact the pressure plate and then back each off 1½ turns you will then have them all set up the same and near enough .070in.

They were always called support rams by David Brown service school instructors and service reps. Maybe because they supported the R/H side of the ramshaft.
I agree low cranking speed will affect starting as will fuel problems but low compression causes starting problems. The clue is in the way diesels run ' compression ignition'.
