Re: Compression test

I take them all out then test each one. Do a dry test then squirt a little oil into the bore and re-test. You will find it better to rig a pipe up for the returns line, saves getting covered in diesel!

Re: 1972 995 gearbox problem

There is no neutral in high low it should be in one or the other. So move the single jaw selector to align with one of the jaws on the two jaw selector. Then put the gear stick into the single jaw so the spring will hold in that jaw. So to engage high/slow or low/slow you push against the spring to ...

Re: 1972 995 gearbox problem

If he had the L/H gear lever out he has probably refitted the lever the wrong side the spring and the gear selector jaws in the wrong place If you lift the lever out you will see the spring, just put the lever the other side the spring and put the selectors in place.

February's Classic tractor

The article in February's Classic Tractor on the 1690 and 1690 T is excellent plus a comprehensive insight into the Selectamatic hydraulic system.

Re: 1690 wiring diagram

Sorry, no. I cannot recall the service department issuing one for the 94 series but there are many similarities to the 90 series.

Re: unknown bolt

You can check the lubrication pipe is still in place by noting where the locking nut was from the bolt head then remove it. Then screw the bolt into the axle until it stops. If the measurement is more or less the same the pipe is located correctly.

It was good to meet Erkki and his friends from Finland at the Newark Vintage Tractor and Heritage Show last weekend. We have corresponded for many years through the Forum and it was good to meet him in person and shake his hand. It was an excellent weekend for the show and the fine weather brought o...

Re: clutch

If you don't have .070ins in feeler gauges, .070ins relates to more or less 1½ turns of the adjusting screw. So if you turn all three adjusting screws until they contact the pressure plate and then back each off 1½ turns you will then have them all set up the same and near enough .070in.

Re: 1494 TCU ( Selectamatic ) question

They were always called support rams by David Brown service school instructors and service reps. Maybe because they supported the R/H side of the ramshaft.

Make sure the fuel pipe from the tank to the lift pump is clear particularly on the bend before the pump.

Re: 996 starting problem

I agree low cranking speed will affect starting as will fuel problems but low compression causes starting problems. The clue is in the way diesels run ' compression ignition'.
