RE: Rate of lowering valve .

Simon,

I'm pretty sure it doesn't screw in, it should "just" pull out. I'd be inclined to try a gentle twist and turn operation with some mole-grips.

Good luck

Alex, I do hope at your young age that's a typo for "a little" and not a typo for "alimoney"

Pete, Glad it worked. As to getting the gear off, again, if your sensible, try a couple of large flat bladed screwdrivers, or similar and gently prise underneaeth. Luckily mine wasn't too tight and came off very easily. Alternatively use a gear puller. For a one of job such as this you'll probably f...

I have to say I was thinking of fitting an oil pressure guage to my 1390 when I had the engine rebuilt and planned to fit a "T" piece where the oil pressure switch goes. Bought quite a few adapters in various threads which were supposed to be the correct one, but they never seemed to fit correctly s...

Dieselrebuild, Sorry, but your post looks like advertising, even worse checking your website you don't appear to offer parts for David Browns, so I'm afraid your post will be deleted. HOWEVER if you can offer a service for David Brown engines I'll add your link to our Web Links section. Alchad (web...

Pete, No doubr with this answer others will say I'm no mechanic either - BUT - what I did was to hold the gear in a vice using lead sheet to protect the gears. At a pinch you could probably use aluminium or even wood. The thing is to try and do it sensibly, tighten the vice gradually and keep checki...

Pete, Don't think you mentioned which model of tractor yours is, but for some reason I think it's a 1290, or 1390? I think I'd be inclined to do the simple things first, stick on a new filter, fill the oil up to the correct level and check it out again and report back. The fact that steering improve...

RE: Progress

Pete, Yes the filter should be immediately visible, its about 4 inches diameter by i inch thick, only possibility is that as it's held on by the bolt that also fastens the outer case to the pump body it's fallen in there? Otherwise it looks as though someone hasn't refitted it - and it would work wi...

RE: 1490 Power Steering Pump Under Pressure - Leaking

Steve, I'm as certain as I can be that there's only one type of pump fitted, it's just the vent/breather arrangement that's different. If I had to fit a new pump and I didn't have the correct connection, I'd probably just use a piece of plastic tubing bent over at the top! For info, pictures below s...

RE: 1490 Power Steering Pump Under Pressure - Leaking

Steve, It is just a breather vent, just two different types of design.Normally there shouldn't be any oil getting into the pipe, or coming out of the vent. AS I said in my earlier post, it does sound as though you're getting pressure back into the suction side of the pump. Did you notice any problem...

RE: 1490 Power Steering Pump Under Pressure - Leaking

Steve,

Hi,

Just to make sure we're talking about the same thing - see diagram below, the pressure (relief) valve I was talking about is item no 9, you seem to be talking about the vent line - item no 34?

Regards

RE: 1490 Power Steering Pump Under Pressure - Leaking

Steve, If you've replaced the large o ring between the can and the pump body it seems strange that you've got a leak, unless the can itself is under pressure, which means that the pressure valve is either letting by because of overpressure - a restriction downstream. Or you've done something wrong i...

Alex,
