Could i politely correct something in ollek's last post. The 3-cylinder engine fitted to the 880 Implematic tractor does actually have dry sleeves which if removed leaves a bore of 100 mm. This would then be the same as the cylinder block as fitted to the early 880 Selectamatic with AD3/55 engine. W...

Please could you provide a serial number for the tractor.

I assume the tractor is a similar specification to what we would have here in the UK. ie. What we call livedrive which is a two stage clutch, both operated by the pedal & does not have a hand operated PTO clutch.

Thank you Scooby for the attached brochure. It is a little difficult to see due to the angle of the photograph, but it looks to me as if the point may be pointing backwards. I have since seen a picture where both ends of the decal are pointed so it may be there have been slight variations over the y...

TEZB is exactly correct with his comment. In the UK we did have 990 tractors with independent PTO hand clutch. These were later Q cab models & were generally 4WD. However if the tractor is UK spec,is a 990 series, and has a PTO hand clutch & a AD4/55 engine it will be a 996. Other markets do differ

The 1390 engine is essentially the same as the engine fitted to the 996 tractor, the difference in horse power being explained by different settings on the fuel injection pump, so you should have no major problems swapping them over. I have always understood that the letters STND which is part of the number stamped in the top of the piston stood for standard size. Oversize generally have the size stamped on them.

If you go back to the original post the picture is of the tractormeter cable drive locating screw, & has no connection with the engine oil pump. The locating screw should have a 5/16" UNC thin lock nut with a copper washer under it.

I had a similar experience when I rebuilt my white DB 770 (AD 3/49) engine several years ago.

I assembled the engine & filled the radiator with coolant before finishing for the day. The following morning I was horrified to find coolant dribbling out of the cylinder head gasket joint on the L/H side of the engine & running down the side of the cylinder block.

I removed the cylinder head again & checked the protrusion of the cylinder sealing rings. All were protruding several thousandths of an inch more than the specified 0.002â€￾ to 0.005â€￾ (excluding the ridge).

The problem was the cylinder head was tightened hard down on to the sealing rings, but the remainder of the gasket was not sufficiently compressed to form a seal for the water galleries. From memory I get the impression the current gaskets, regardless of source are thinner & harder than those originally fitted. Also the current gaskets are made for the later engines after August 1972 when the sealing rings were discontinued, so these engines have no protrusion at all.

At the time I resolved the problem by ordering & fitting three new sealing rings which were slightly thinner than the originals. When fitted the protrusion was within the specified tolerance & the coolant did not leak. I cannot explain why the original sealing rings are thicker on the earlier engines.

Replacement standard bore sealing rings are still available from any Case IH dealer under part number K914346. Unfortunately 0.020â€￾ oversize K917824 & 0.040â€￾ oversize K917825 sealing rings are no longer available. Alternatively the underside of the original sealing rings can be machined so as not to remove the ridge on the top.

Apologies for asking such a trivial question.

What is the colour of the plate on the bonnet grille prior to sticking on the Livedrive 6/12 decal, as the base colour is visible around the edge of the decal.

Red, Black, White or Brown?

While olleks explanation of the engine designation is correct for the 4600 model, the 3800 is different. My understanding is that the 3800 engine is a gasoline version of the white 770 diesel engine (ie 3/49 100 mm bore x 4 inches stroke) so a capacity of 3.4 litres (147 cubic inches) is approximate...

If you go to a Case IH dealer & specify you want a genuine Case IH K68073 & not a equivalent, then it will be correct. I realise a Case IH dealer may be some distance away.
